What's on tap for this year?

Here's a tentative yearly schedule. Again, feel free to offer suggestions, improvements, blatant criticism. We can take it!

October: 2nd Annual Halloween Party. Saturday, October 29, evening. See upcoming post.

November: Volunteer (Saturday or Sunday daytime event) for Harvesters local food network.

December: Missouri Town 1855 Candle Lantern Tour. Evening event.

January: Nascart. Note the "T" at the end. . .

February: Some sort of dancing? Like maybe salsa at the Madrid, since we didn't make it last year?

March: 3rd Fridays downtown for the Urban Culture Project (different from First Fridays)

April: spring volunteer project--at the Johnson County Interfaith Housing Network's family center.

May: some sort of outdoors, spring-y type of fun at a park or lake.

Why have a special group for people this age? Why does it matter?

I linked a couple of articles on the sidebar. Pretty much it doesn't matter, but it's fun to get together for fellowship with like-minded individuals of the same generation (or close enough). It's fun to get together with people of other ages, too. If you visit SMUUCh's website, there are a lot of opportunities for cross-generational fellowship, as well. Volunteer with Religious Education to get to know the little ones, or with the Young Adults (i.e. high-schoolers for those not versed in UU-speak) to get to know the teens. All-church social events abound, and there are plenty of opportunities for volunteering.

However, we formed this group because sometimes, Kansas City, and parts of Johnson County in particular, can be isolating. Everyone has their clique, workplace environments are cloistered, the city is segregated and segmented, and it's hard if you're new here, if you've been away for a while, if you didn't go to college nearby.

On top of that, this stage of life in contemporary America is defined by frequent, rapid change. Change in living conditions, educational pursuits, employment opportunities, marital status, sexual identity, parenthood, financial matters. With all these rapid changes, it's nice to have a network within the church community of people who are facing some of the same challenges and rewards that come with this stage in life.

So, who's in charge here?

Uh, good question. Leona Davis and myself (Elizabeth Schmidt) were involved in conceiving it, so we still kind of run with it. Rev. Thom also has helped nurture the group. However, we are looking for involvement and group ownership, so if you have ideas, suggestions, etc. please tell us! You can run away with it!

Two things we really could use help with now would be a person who would help develop and maintain an informal Q2 "directory." Another thing would be someone who could sort of head up volunteer projects. Do I hear volunteers?

I really just created this post so I could post a picture of Leona and I singing karaoke at Jennifer Holloway's friend Lana's karaoke party--we met that crowd through Q2, so it's semi-relevant.

Welcome to the Quarterlife Quorum blog.

Colloqially known as "Q2", this group was founded, or loosely conceived of in the summer of 2004. I will post a couple of basic FAQ answers and then link them on the sidebar so they'll be available for future viewing. This installment is the whole "who are you guys, anyway?" thing.

The Quarterlife Quorum is a group of young people over the age of 21 discovering the metro Kansas City region together in an active atmosphere of Unitarian Universalist fellowship. Everyone sharing the joys and concerns this stage of life brings are welcome to join us. Not to be confused with the church's "young adult" program, which means high schoolers, we are a group of adults who want to get together and do all those things that you always mean to do but never get around to, like see that museum you keep hearing about. We also try to do things that are fun but frivolous and have gotten squeezed out of our adult schedules, things like bowling or mini-golf. Well, maybe not fun to everyone.

We generally get together about once a month. Anyone is welcome: men, women, members, friends, singletons and marrieds, parents or not, gay or straight, even old or young. The only requirement is 21-and-over, in order to keep an ethical division from the UU Young Adult programming for high schoolers and college campus outreach programs. Our program is strictly 'adult only' but not in a bad kind of way:)

Anyway, we try to get together once a month during the "school year." We try to switch up what we do, where we go, and how much it costs, and what part of the metro area it's in. Previous examples include a T-Bones game, pontoon boating on Lake Jacomo, dinner at Dick Clark's, haunted housing, Chiefs party, Angel tree adoption, First Fridays in the crossroads district, karaoke, halloween party, and an election night party.

You may have also seen postings in the church bulletin about a Q2 lunch. This elusive goal has never been reached, since Q2ers tend to attend erratically, due to weird schedules and other commitments. We do, however, sometimes trek to lunch together after services if providence, destiny and happenstance conspire to congregate a large group of us at the same time on the same Sunday.
