June Activity

See the email below regarding the June River Run to benefit the SW Blvd Family Health Center. We can iron out the details of where to meet up, etc. as it gets closer to the date.
_______________________________________________

Erin,
Here are more details about the River Run on June 17th. You would need to arrive at Kobi’s Bar and Grill in Bonner Springs around 10:30 a.m.and ask for either Priscilla Allen or Kevin Dennis, the clinic people in charge of the run. They will give you specific instructions. You will be going in groups of 2-3 to the various stops on the run. Everyone meets at Kobi’s and leaves about noon to go to the first stop. The stops are: The Brickyard in Olathe, Helen’s Hilltop in Tonganoxie, and Slow Ride in Lawrence. Your volunteers will be manning a table at a stop and supervising the poker draw. Dress is casual. You will be given a black event t-shirt to wear and directions on how to get to each stop. You may be inside or outside if the weather is good. Everyone goes back to Kobi’s between 4:30 and 5 so you would be free to leave then or return to Kobi’s for the auction and festivities. I believe that the address for Kobi’s is 113 Oak Street, Bonner Springs 66012. I can get directions to you when the event gets closer. Please e-mail me with any questions.

Hi everyone!

First of all, great job on the bake sale--we did an awesome job!

Secondly, could anyone let me know if you know any emails to add to our list? I feel like we're forgetting a couple of people and they weren't at our meeting this winter to add their emails. Feel free to forward this to anyone.

Thirdly, this info is posted to www.quarterlifequorum.blogspot.com if you want to access it there.

1. The AIDS Walk is at Theis Park, located at 47th and Oak just south of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
Registration opens at 8:00 a.m.
Welcoming Ceremonies commence at 9:30 a.m
and at 10 a.m. WE WALK!

I will probably be there between 9:00 and 9:15 a.m. to make our team donation (GO TEAM!) which I still have to pick up from Deb, by the way, and I'm not exactly sure how registration works but I'll do my best to check us in as a team.

Let's meet beginning at 9:30 in front of the registration tables. I know there will probably be many, and they will be crowded, but I haven't been there and I don't know what kind of "landmarks" there will be so that's the only thing I can think of that we all will recognize and be able to find. We'll stand in front of them far enough out to not get in the way of the line.

I will have my cell (913) 709-5455 if you can't find us. Be there no later than 9:45 because then we'll want to mosey on over and catch some of the opening ceremonies, plus get in line to walk.

The course is 3.5 miles. We will be WALKING, not running (that means you, Ian!) so we will probably finish in about an hour, depending on how crowded and hot it is! After that, we'll seek nourishment at our minister's house.

2. Thom has kindly invited us to brunch at his place at 11:30, so if you can't make the walk but can meet us later, feel free to come by. It'll mainly be bagels, so feel free to contribute juice, or other brunchable items if you wish. We're bringing fruit.

This is from Thom:

Thom's condo is located at 202 E. 51st Street in the Brookside / South Plaza
neighborhood.

I am basically at the corner of 51st and Brookside (or 51st and Grand).
Grand is a one-way street with parking on both sides.

Cell is 913-645-1504 if you need directions.

Thanks, everyone. Hope to see you Saturday morning!

Good evening everyone,
It was good too see all of you this morning.
We totaled up the proceeds earned from the coffee hour and it came to $147.54. Also, I will not be able to make the walk, so whomever is taking the money to the walk, contact Deb Markum.
There was plenty of food left and it is in the house fridge and freezer.

Don't forget about the brunch next weekend!

Don

Hi!

I hope everyone's enjoying this weather. It will be nice for the AIDS Walk, April 22 (Saturday). If you haven't registered already, check out the blog for more info about that--there is no registration fee, although you are encouraged to raise donations for it.

One way we hope to do that as a team of walkers is by sponsoring a coffee hour between the April 9th Church Services. You can help out with this even if you can't make the walk. We really hope as many people will participate as possible. It's also a good opportunity to get together on a Sunday morning and even go to worship services together (something that doesn't happen too often due to our crazy schedules).

What do you need to do if you'd like to help out? It's easy.

1. Bake or buy a goody for the bake sale.
2. Price it for individual sale (i.e. 1 large muffin for $0.75)
3. Bring it to the Barn Chapel to set up at 8:45
4. Stick around if you can and help us sell your wares and collect $$ from 9-10.

That's it. You can go to service before or after, so if you go to first service just leave it in the Barn Chapel for us to set up when we get there. Also, if you have change, you might bring it to help people make change just because we're not going to mess with getting change from the bank or anything. Easy-peasy.

Then, of course, we will donate our proceeds as our team fundraising contribution to the AIDS Walk. If you can, come walk with us as that's our meeting this month. Rev. Thom has invited us all to enjoy brunch at his place after the walk, so there will be a socializing bit, too. Hope to see you all this Sunday, April 9!

Hi everyone,

I hope bowling went well last week. My spring break was awesome, however it is time to get off my tail and become a productive member of society again.

With that being said, I have been asked by Vicki Trott of the Membership committee to assist with Coffee Cleanup after the late service on the first Sunday of every month. It is usually a two to three person job with the more help, the fast and easier of a job, yet I am the only one so far.

Would there happen to be anyone from the Q2 group interesting in helping out a fellow group member with this little task?

We can't start cleaning up the coffee pots until after the second service is over, with the kitchen next to Fellowship Hall, so I am planning on going to the second service and starting as soon as the service is over.

If anyone has an extra ten-fifteen minutes in their Sunday's and can help, I would REALLY appreciate the assistance.

Thanks,
Don Keener

INFORMATION ON GENERAL ASSEMBLY

For those of you who have been wondering, this is my garbled summary of GA expenses based on the website http://www.uua.org/ga/reg.html.

The event is Wednesday through Sunday. You can pay for the whole thing, or just by the day. For example, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday would be three days to pay for.

You get a reduced rate by registering before April 30th. After then, these prices go up.

To go Wed-Sun. for an adult is $280, or a single day is $95. (So Fri-Sat.-Sun would be $285, not much of a bargain there. Sat-Sun only would be $190.)

What does this include? Days full of programs, workshops, lectures and worship. Check out this brochure: http://www.uua.org/ga/ga06/CongregationMailing.pdf

As for housing, these rooms are cheap, ($37 double, $41 single) but they'll go fast. Here are the details:

"Washington University Guest HousingLocated eight miles west of the America's Center Note: You must be 18 years of age to reserve a room unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. Reservations must be made online at: summer.wustl.edu/guest.html . Please be sure to indicate that you are a General Assembly attendee when providing your check-in information. All rooms have twin beds, a telephone with voicemail, and are air conditioned. Ethernet access is available at $5/day. Bed linen and towels are provided. Kitchenette, television lounge, vending machines and laundry facilities are located in the building. All residential halls are smoke-free. Dining is available seven days a week, with cash being the only accepted form of payment. Parking passes may be purchased online or at check-in for $4/day. Note: We do not have a block of rooms at Washington University - all rooms are open to the public and will sell out quickly. "

I think, alternatively, we could explore getting a cheap motel room and bunking up. Like a motel room with four women sharing two double beds would be $53.10 per night at the St. Louis Airport Hotel. Times two nights (Fri. and Sat.) is $106.20, split four ways is $26.55. Not bad.

As for transportation, I propose we carpool. With gas prices as they are, and St. Louis being 4 hours, 3 minutes and 261.95 miles according to mapquest. . .well, let's say gas is $2.25 a gallon and you get 28 miles per gallon. That's gonna be about $22 in gas one way. Plus driving around St. Louis to the conference site, plus coming home. I'd say maybe $50 in gas for the entire trip, again, split however many ways you have passengers in the car (4?)

So. . .assuming you went for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and stayed in the hotel quoted above with four people, and drove in a car with four people, you could say that per person, you'd be looking at
$285 for registration
$26.55 for housing
$13.50 for gas

$325.00 total.

Then you've got food, of course. I'm an incredibly cheap traveler so I like to throw my cooler in the back of the car and get sandwich stuff and granola bars and fruit for breakfast. So grocery store eating can keep your food costs low.

There are lots of options, and everyone can try to customize their trip to their needs. (maybe you work weekends and only want to go Wednesday and Thursday, or maybe you want a private room with your partner, you might want to eat out every meal, or drive yourself for flexibility) but this should get the ball rolling for your planning.

AIDS WALK UPDATE!

Our team has been created! Just to be clear, this walk DOES NOT COST YOU ANYTHING in terms of a registration fee. The idea is you register online, and you get people to donate you money. There is a really cool website that does all of this for you via people's credit cards and bank cards, so you don't need to handle money, but you can also gather money and donate it. What do you need to do if you want to participate?
1. Visit the website http://www.aidswalkkansascity.org/ and register to walk. It is very easy and took me less than 10 minutes. You will be asked at a certain point in the process if you are part of a team--just scroll down and look for Quarterlife Quorum to select it.
2. Follow the website's instructions for inviting people to sponsor you to walk, if you choose to do so. Make your own donation, should you choose to do so.
3. Help us sponsor a coffee hour bake sale to raise team donations for the walk. All you need to do is bake (or buy) a breakfast-y treat. Then bring it to church for coffee hour April 9th. You should be there by 9:50 to set up. Help us sell your treats and collect money, etc. All the money we make will go into a group donation for our team for the AIDS Walk.
4. Walk! Have fun!
Saturday, April 22nd at Theis Park, located at 47th and Oak just south of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Registration opens at 8:00 a.m., Welcoming Ceremonies commence at 9:30 a.m. and at 10 a.m. WE WALK! I have done this before (ages ago, in high school) and the Welcoming Ceremonies are actually pretty fun.
5. After the walk, Rev. Thom Belote has invited us to his place, just south of the plaza near Brookside, for brunch. Details to come soon.

Is anyone thinking about going to GA? (June 21st-25th.)
This year it is in St. Louis, and that is the closest it is planning on being to KC until atleast 2010.
